As Karnataka heads to the polling booth today in a high-stakes election battle, the challenge for BJP is to blunt anti-incumbency against the only government it heads in south India, a feat no party has achieved in the state since 1985. For Congress, dethroning its archrival would be a first step towards resurrecting its dipping fortunes while the H D Deve Gowda-led JD(S) is fighting to hold on to its turf. The outcome will not only set the tone for the Lok Sabha polls but also have a direct bearing on opposition unity ahead of 2024.
